A bank or a bureau will quote two other rates. It buys below this figure and sells above it; the gap is its margin, and a fee may come on top.

At a bank or a bureau you will get a different amount: it changes at its own buying and selling rates, not at this one, and may charge a fee.

Before you change money

Ask for the rate and the fee in writing and compare what you would get with this answer. The difference is what the exchange costs you.

This page shows how much a single South African rand is worth in euros. It is the reverse of the usual direction: instead of asking what a euro buys in rand, you start with the local currency and work out what it converts to abroad.

Who uses the reverse direction

The reverse figure matters when you are selling rand or paying a foreign bill with local money. If you hold rand and need euros for a purchase, a subscription or a transfer, the rate tells you what your money is worth on the other side. Anyone invoiced in euros but earning in rand needs this view.

Why the figure is a small decimal

A single rand buys only a fraction of a euro, so the rate appears as a small decimal rather than a whole amount. That is normal: the rand is worth less than the euro, and the figure simply reflects the official reference rate of .

Reading the table of round amounts

The table lists round rand amounts alongside their euro value, so you do not have to multiply a decimal yourself. Find the amount closest to what you are converting and read across. For a sum that is not listed, scale the nearest row.
